DJ SETUP GUIDE

RF-01 v1.0.0 — macOS

Overview

RF-01 can visualize your DJ sets in real time. This guide explains how to route audio from DJ software (TRAKTOR, rekordbox, Serato, etc.) into RF-01 for live visual generation.

Method 1 — SYS Button (Recommended)

The simplest method. Available on macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. No additional software required.

  1. Launch RF-01 and your DJ software.
  2. Click the SYS button in RF-01's top bar.
  3. macOS will prompt for Screen & System Audio Recording permission on first use. Grant the permission.
  4. RF-01 will immediately begin capturing all system audio — including your DJ software's output.
  5. The status display will show SYSTEM AUDIO and CAPTURING.
SYS captures all system audio. If other applications are producing sound, those will also be analyzed. For isolated DJ audio, use Method 2.

Method 2 — Virtual Audio Device

Use a virtual audio driver to route audio from your DJ software to RF-01. Works on macOS 12 and earlier, or when you need isolated audio routing.

  1. Install BlackHole (free, open-source) from github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole.
  2. Open Audio MIDI Setup (Applications → Utilities).
  3. Click + at the bottom left and select Create Multi-Output Device.
  4. Check both your main audio output (e.g., your DJ controller) and BlackHole 2ch.
  5. In your DJ software, set the audio output to the Multi-Output Device you just created.
  6. In RF-01, click LIVE — the device picker panel opens automatically. Select BlackHole 2ch from the list.
  7. Audio now flows to both your speakers and RF-01 simultaneously.
DJ Software → Multi-Output Device ─┬→ DJ Controller → Speakers └→ BlackHole 2ch → RF-01 (LIVE)

Method 3 — Microphone

The simplest zero-configuration approach. Place your iPhone near the speakers and use the built-in microphone to capture audio. Not ideal for precision, but works for quick setups and live performances. Click LIVE on the iPhone and position it where it can pick up the sound.

TRAKTOR S4 Setup Example

Mac ← USB → TRAKTOR S4 │ ├─ TRAKTOR (software) on Mac │ └─ Audio output → S4 Main Out → Speakers │ ├─ RF-01 (LIVE mode) ★ Direct │ └─ Click LIVE → Select "Traktor S4" from device panel │ ├─ RF-01 (SYS mode) │ └─ Captures system audio directly │ └─ RF-01 (LIVE + BlackHole) └─ Multi-Output Device → BlackHole 2ch → RF-01

Tips

  • Direct connection: If your DJ controller has audio outputs routed through USB, click LIVE and select the controller directly from the device panel — no additional setup required.
  • When using SYS, RF-01 does not output captured audio through speakers — no feedback loop will occur.
  • For the best visual response, ensure your DJ software's master output level is healthy (not clipping, not too quiet).
  • Use the DECAY knob to control how much visual history persists — lower values for sharp, rhythmic response; higher values for smoother, ambient trails.
  • Connect an external display via HDMI and click OUT to send clean visuals to a projector while controlling RF-01 on your main screen.
  • The REC button captures both visuals and audio — useful for recording your set's visual output for social media.
